Teen Entrepreneur Workshop in Folsom

FREE Business Workshop for Teenagers on May 26th

teenager1YoungBiz  is coming to Folsom and I would encourage parents of teenagers to get their teenagers involved. This workshop is designed to teach basic financial skills and offer aspiring entrepreneurs the structure and encouragement to pursue their dreams.  According to the Young Americans Center for Financial Education nearly one third of high school seniors use credit cards. Another statistic: the average college student graduates with $22,500.00 of debt and that is not counting those who don’t actually get their diploma! I wish they had this workshop around when my teenagers were in high school because they could have benefited greatly.

The format is designed for high school students and encourages creative thinking while developing fundamental financial skills coupled with real time examples of peer success. The venue is the Folsom Public Library  (Stafford St.) and begins at 4:30 until 7PM.  Students will have the opportunity to meet successful business people (their own age!) and find out how they succeeded. Some of the ideas are as basic as breakfast cereal! Seating is limited so call 916-806-3989 to reserve your seat. For more information contact: mariehall@youngbiz.com

Folsom Bridge Now Open to Traffic

It’s Officially Opened!

bridge-trafficAll three counties:Sacramento, Placer and El Dorado rejoiced at the opening of Folsom Lake Crossing today. There will be 20,000  less cars driving through downtown Folsom trying to get from Sacramento county to each of the other two. Kids young and old walked, bicycled, motorcycled and jogged across the new bridge. There was great BBQ and other vendors who managed to set up shop for the opening and of course the Human Chain of Gratitude was there filming those who participated.

The decrease in traffic will be especially appreciated by those living in the historic district. The various side streets that were closed off to cross traffic made travel through town difficult and when school lets out at Sutter Jr. High there should be a noticeable reduction of congestion. The timing couldn’t be better for the downtown merchants since Easter week starts the beginning of the various festivals and street fairs. The first this year is on April 19th and is the Antique Fair hosted by Sutter St. merchants.

Commuters can count on a reduction in travel time by about 10-15 minutes and longer for those traveling from Placer county to El dorado county. One thing to keep in mind will be watching your speed limit. Folsom police is cracking down on speeders and will be keeping a close eye on the new bridge for violators so keep that in mind.

Folsom Lake Crossing Opens March 28, 2009

New bridge ready for use by 4PM

the-american-river-in-folsom-caThe band will play, the dignitaries will give their speeches and then the people will for one time only be able to walk along the new bridge in Folsom CA this Saturday, March 28th, and see the American River under their feet. There hasn’t been this much excitement in Folsom since the Natomas Crossing was finished in 1999.

There is a group of people forming the Human Chain of Gratitude on Saturday to encourage others to have an attitude of gratitude despite what this economy is doing.  I plan on riding my bike across the bridge and joining those grateful souls for a toast and enjoy this one time event.

Another event coming up is the community garage sale in Lembi Park this May 2nd. My office will pick up donated items to be sold with the proceeds going to the Folsom City Zoo. If you would like to donate any gently used items please email me or call my office at 916-984-8778

The New Folsom Bridge

Folsom Lake Crossing Opens March 28th

Since the Dam road closed in 2003 the people of Folsom have had to endure over 18000 cars traveling through the downtown streets not to mention the impact  on the residents and small businesses in the historic district.  The sad truth is that although more people were detoured through that part of town there has not been an increase in business revenue simply because people are passing through.

The declining economy notwithstanding it seems that some businesses have managed to survive and a few have thrived. Chicago Fire, my favorite pizza place, has expanded despite the lack of parking in the historic district and Scarlet’s next door seems especially busy on weekends. Does this mean that once the new bridge opens that we’ll see a reverse in downtown traffic or will it bring more people to that part of town knowing they won’t have to deal with the additional traffic? Inquiring minds want to know….

Folsom’s First Bicycle Film Festival

Feb 13th starts new season

cyclists-by-jason-montiel1

by Jason Montiel

Folsom has developed a reputation as one of the best places to live due to the outdoor recreation available nearly 11 months of the year although this year seems to be the exception…due to a lack of rain the number pushes 12 months.  So this year the city is hosting it’s first film festival featuring  “Breaking Away” at 7 p.m. at 48 Natoma St. Just in case you don’t know this is the location of the new Art Center/Senior Center which is a re-make of the fire station next to the city offices.

This presentation was inspired by the upcoming Amgen Bike Race in Sacramento on Feb. 14 and the city of Folsom hopes the locals will support that race and encourage other event sponsors to consider our region when looking for venues. Promotion is something taken very seriously in this town and I wouldn’t be surprised to see film crews on the streets with celebs shopping at the local antique shops between takes.

Speaking of a lack of rain…while driving down Empire Ranch Rd. I caught a clear view of the Folsom puddle and was surprised how brown the lake appears. Watering lawns is now limited to every other day and if you get caught spraying off your sidewalk or driveway you could be fined. I’ve begun to pray for rain because I remember my first year in California, which just happened to be in the middle of the drought in 1977. We used to save the drain water from the washing machine to water the lawn and wash the cars. Local restaurants have begun to only serve water upon request so if anyone has a hotline to heaven please pick up the phone…we need the water.

REI Hosts FREE Ski Equipment Clinic in Folsom CA

Learn How To Professionally Maintain Your Equipment

Every so often there is a seminar about taking care of equipment that I would actually want to attend and considering the high cost of maintaining my skis this looked like something worth the effort. I barely give my skis a thought until it’s time to drag them out of the closet and head up the hill. Let’s face it, tightening bindings and waxing skis isn’t exactly exciting let alone sharpening edges and checking for tensions. So when I got my monthly email reminder from REI and saw this seminar I thought I’d share the information with all you ski and snowboard fans.

There are other events that REI has and trips too! On my hike yesterday with the Sacramento Trail Mix  I met a gal who told me about a trip to Utah to see Zion Canyon and others this June. Apparently REI sets up trips across the world for various interests and this hiking one sounded fantastic. It includes all meals, transportation to/from the airport, lodging and guides for a week. Airfare was not included but the price was reasonable and knowing you’ll be spending time with other folks who have similar interests makes it appealing. Finding friends and family who move at the same pace with the same interests can be difficult and this offers a great way to take a vacation focusing on what you like to do.

Christmas Shopping on Sutter St. In Folsom Ca

Great Places to Find Unique Gifts

When my kids were young we used to take them to Historic Folsom and let them buy one ornament each for the Christmas tree during December. Each child would select from the array of ornaments at one of the many shops on Sutter St. and invariably would select the first one they were attracted to. Christmas in Folsom includes old fashioned things like Santa riding throughout the neighborhoods on a fire truck, tossing candy canes out to the children and watching the Christmas tree being lit in old town on Wool St.

Last Saturday American Visions Art Gallery hosted a reception to meet Cao Yong, an artist who commands upwards of $85,000 per original painting. This  Sutter St. gallery focuses on international artists but Giovanna also opens her doors to up and coming local artists. When I was involved with the Folsom Arts Association I met a number of local artists in town and a couple have held workshops at their studios this past month to make Christmas gifts. Another great idea to think about  when looking for that special gift.

Of course Christmas isn’t complete without chocolate and Snooks offers the best on Sutter St. I was hosting a dinner party and needed favors and nothing says welcome like a truffle from Snooks. My husband is hooked on their Unbearably Hot Cinnamon Bears. Strolling down Sutter St. you’ll find jewelry stores, antique shops, coffee bars, a wine tasting room and more. All offer great gift wraps and supporting the local merchants has always been my goal as a small business owner.

Folsom Celebrates Veteran’s Day Parade

  Over 1300 Participants

Folsom’s Veteran’s Day Parade was huge this year with lots of candy thrown out to the crowds and hot dogs & soda for all at the Veterans Memorial in Lions Park afterwards. There were floats representing each arm of the military, marching bands from numerous high schools, Miss Folsom, Boy Scouts and plenty of politicians shaking hands with the crowds. The best part was watching the kids wave their flags and enjoy the peace and freedom these brave soldiers provide for us and the gracious smiles of the Veterans themselves.

One military group that participated was from the High Tech Regional Training Division of the armed forces located in Sacramento. I guess it would make sense to locate that particular training center in California. These are the next generation of people to serve and they need to be cutting edge. ROTC was represented from a couple of different high schools from around the region and of course many scout groups.

Some of the local businesses had floats and I was handed a $2 Hobby Buck from Hobbytown USA. There were dancers from Hawkins School of Dance and the latest in assault vehicles from the Folsom Police Dept. who by the way did an excellent job of keeping things orderly and traffic under control. The weather held so the community could gather to commemorate those who fought and died to keep our freedoms.

Thanksgiving Day Race In Folsom, CA

Folsom Twin Lakes Food Bank Benefits

Capitol Adventure is once again hosting its Turkey Trot Run to benefit Folsom’s food bank and the community is responding with an enthusiastic yes despite the economic news. This year’s runners will enjoy the trails throughout the Parkway and there will be “chip timing” to accurately gauge the winner and runner ups. This being the land of Intel I’m not surprised that the latest technology in race results would be readily available and I’ve read that it will produce immediate web-based race results.

Folsom is developing quite a reputation for outdoor activities due to the consistently great weather and numerous parks and trails. This past election voted in Ernie Sheldon who has been instrumental in the development of the parks and recreation dept. in Folsom and even has a park named after him! We look forward to more opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors through his leadership.

Another local charity “Coats for Kids” is collecting gently used and new coats to be distributed to children and I am proud to say that my REMAX Gold office is a drop off point for the Folsom community. This is a time sensitive donation and the cut off is NOV 15th. If you have any coats you would like to donate and cannot get to the office please give me a call and I will be happy to pick up any donations you have and place them in the barrels at my office or you can drop them at 2340 E. Bidwell St.

Granite Bay CA Autumn Arts Festival

Kickoff for new Art & Artist Magazine

Quarry Ponds, the newest shopping center in Granite Bay, hosted a culinary and theatre art festival last weekend that showcased a few artist friends of mine. There was a salsa contest by local chefs, ballroom dance exposition and a raffle for $500 along with the art show featuring local artists from the Folsom Lake area.

The weather was perfect for outdoor activity and I heard that this event will be the first of many for this local center. Since the seasons are changing perhaps the owners would consider a wine tasting dinner or hosting a ZAP dinner but that’s another blog.

Sierra Style Magazine was there promoting their  “Saving with Style” program which features local businesses who participate by offering discounts on their products or services. This is a entertainment type card exclusive to local businesses who advertise in the magazine. My artist friends do advertise in Sierra Style so were on hand to promote the festival and offer their support.

I was having so much fun looking at the art and watching the dancing that I forgot to look for a copy of the much anticipated Art & Artist Magazine  The art world is expanding in our region and once this magazine hits the stands I think we might have a shot at losing our cow town reputation.
